The Danish-led international crew sign a contract to compete in the Extreme Sailing Series using technical footwear from adidas sailing

Lüneburg, Germany, September 8th, 2014
adidas sailing has signed a deal to supply the SAP Extreme Sailing Team with its cutting-edge technical footwear. Now in its third season, the Danish-led crew is edging closer to the podium in the Extreme Sailing Series, arguably the toughest global circuit in grand prix sailing today.

Co-skippered by Jes Gram-Hansen and Rasmus Kostner from Denmark, the SAP Extreme Sailing Team are set to go into battle later this week in the Istanbul, Act 6 of the Extreme Sailing Series, where the crew will be racing with their new adidas gr01 Grinder shoes for the first time. “The Extreme 40 is always demanding, always challenging to sail and with up to eight races each day, it’s touch maintaining your concentration and balance as you run from side to side across the trampoline,” says Kostner, who calls the tactics. “We have tested adidas sailing’s Grinder shoes during training and they provide excellent grip in dry or wet conditions, and the drainage system in the base of the shoes keeps your feet much drier than other technical shoes in the market.”

Gram-Hansen, who helms the boat, said the adidas motto, ‘Only the best for the athlete’, chimes well with the teams own high aspirations. “Succeeding in a professional circuit like the Extreme Sailing Series is about getting all the small details right,” he says. “With our sponsor SAP, we are always analysing every aspect of our performance and looking at every way possible to improve our performance. On a boat that is always jumping around, like the Extreme 40, we were looking for a shoe that could provide us with maximum stability and grip, which is why we were very happy to find the Grinder has these qualities in abundance.”

Thomas Fochler, CEO of adidas sailing licensee terrathree GmbH, is delighted to be working with the crew and supporting them in their bid for glory on the international circuit. “adidas has built its reputation on designing and making footwear that helps athletes move faster, with more efficiency and greater precision,” he says. “It is really exciting for us to be helping world-class sailors like the SAP Extreme Sailing Team to compete at the highest level, and it is great that they have recognised our footwear as the best shoes for such a demanding job.”

Anke Fochler, co-founder of terrathree GmbH responsible for product and marketing, says a large part of the credit for the innovations in the Grinder shoe should go to Jochen Schümann, the three-time Olympic Champion who worked closely with adidas’ technical design department. “The shoes were designed and developed at the adidas Headquarter in Germany, and they feature a stable, low-profile design, treaded outsole with integrated heel and toe protection, all features that Jochen said would be vital for a dependable sailing shoe.”

Technical features of the gr01 shoe include:

  • Upper with integrated TPU heel and toe protection
  • 3D open weave warp-knit mesh for high breathability
  • Moulded EVA insole for anatomical comfort
  • Drain holes allow firm traction in wet conditions
  • Non-marking rubber outsole grips during extreme linear and lateral movements
