Russia on the Horizon

It feels like only yesterday that the Extreme Sailing Series was wrapping up on the docks in Hamburg. Now Act 5 in St. Petersburg is less than one week away and the teams are once again in unpacking phase.

Between September 1st and 4th the Neva River, in front of the famous Peter and Paul fortress, will be once again transformed into an action-packed stadium race course. Last year the venue proved challenging for all the teams, who battled it out with fickle wind and ever-present current, in front of thousands of enthusiastic spectators who came came down to the water to catch the racing, the music and the sunshine.

SAP Extreme Sailing Team will enter this event in good form. Over the last month the team have put in some solid time on the water, solid time in the gym, and poured over SAP Analytics analysis, not only of their most recent performance in Hamburg, but their performance in St. Petersburg last year. Looking back to last years event has served as a useful reminder of the venue’s many idiosyncrasies. With the leaderboard stacked as closely as it is, any and all insights could prove to be advantageous when the teams hit the water.

The top podium spot remains heavily guarded by Oman Air, who hold on to a nearly unassailable series lead. However the second and third spots on the podium are still very much up for grabs – as can be seen in the below graphic – with only the finest of margins separating SAP Extreme Sailing Team, Alinghi, and Red Bull Extreme Sailing Team.

“We do have a bit of unfinished business in St Petersburg. Last year we were not as prepared for the race course as we are today. Last year we had a major repair on our boat and were not settled nor calm for the extremely difficult and unpredictable conditions. This year we have done our homework and look forward to righting the wrongs,” commented co-skipper and tactician Rasmus Køstner.
